Olay Total Effects 7 in One Cream + Serum Duo Review and Swatch

June 05, 2013

"A penguin without a heart song is hardly a penguin at all!" Ring a bell? Yes, it is from the very cute movie 'Happy Feet', a story about a penguin who was different from others of his own kind; a penguin who could not sing like the other penguins but who could dance (tap-dance, rather) really well.

A conversation from the same movie between Mumble (the tap-dancing penguin) and his dad, Memphis, soon after Mumble hatched from his egg:

Memphis: Whatcha doin' there, boy?
Baby Mumble: [tap dancing] I'm happy, Pa!
Memphis: Whatcha doin' with your feet?
Baby Mumble: [looks down] They're happy, too!

Okay, so I am not reviewing the movie, in case you were wondering . But there are two reasons for bringing it up. The first reason - Look at the Olay Total Effects bottle... Does it not look like a penguin? Especially the pump... does it not look like a penguin's head??

The second reason - Well, there is not much difference right now between Junior and Baby Mumble!! We are off to a riverside resort tomorrow; and he is already dancing, hopping, jumping and what not, around the whole house.

Before starting with the review, I would to like to mention that this review is based on my 7-day experience of using the Olay Total Effects 7 in One Cream + Serum Duo. Okay, now let me dive straight in...

My Experience

I am in my thirties with dry-combination skin. I have used the original Olay Total Effects 7 in One Day Cream in the 'Gentle' variant in my twenties, mainly as a moisturiser; and quite liked it at that time; but did not repurchase as I found it overpriced.

This cream + serum duo has a similar packaging and texture to the original. What is different is that it has an added serum and when you see the bottle up close, you will find beige swirls amidst the white cream. What you get in your hand, though, is just a plain white cream; sadly, no swirls. Texture-wise, it is smooth and rich. Inspite if its rich texture, this gets absorbed by my skin in no time. I hate those thick creams that just 'sit' on your face. My face does feel a bit sticky immediately after application but that goes away in some time. It gives adequate moisturization and a glow which instantly brightens up my face. I do not have large or many open pores but whatever there are, they do appear to have slightly reduced in size due to which my skin does look a bit smoother.

For my dry skin, one pump was enough for both face and neck. I think oily-skin beauties might not need that much; so check and use the pump accordingly.

The best use of this cream + serum, I have to admit without doubt, is as a pre-makeup moisturizer. Due to its non-greasy nature and its skin-smoothening quality, it acted as a perfect moisturizer to apply under foundation. My foundation looked better and also stayed longer; however, this cream + serum may not be the sole reason for that, but it did contribute. Remember, even if you have dry skin, you need to use a moisturizer that hydrates adequately but is not greasy at the same time. Makeup tends to slide off on a greasy base. So using a suitable pre-makeup moisturiser also contributes to making your makeup stay put longer. And this Olay cream is good for that.

I do not have wrinkles or other ageing signs yet (I think ), so cannot comment on that. In any case, the skin renewal process takes time; and 7 days is too short a time frame to judge the effectiveness of a skincare product, more so of an anti-ageing one. And also remember, no matter what you put on your face; what you put inside your body, in other words, what you eat, is equally important, okay... more important. Without a well-balanced diet, adequate sleep, and a suitable fitness routine, no cream in the world can save you!!!

Pros

  • Combination of both cream and serum in one product; no need to use an extra product
  • Smooth and rich texture
  • Gets absorbed nicely and easily
  • Moisturizes adequately
  • Non-greasy but gives a nice glow and brightening effect; smoothens skin surface; pores appear smaller
  • Suitable as a pre-makeup moisturizer
  • Dermatologically tested

Cons

  • Price
  • Chemicals in the ingredient list

Overall Impression

The Olay Total Effects 7 in One Cream + Serum Duo is a non-greasy cream that provides adequate hydration and combines the power of moisturizer + serum in one product. It is wonderful as a pre-makeup moisturizer. Since the review is based on my 7-day experience with the product, it is an insufficient time frame for me to judge its anti-ageing claims. However, I shall update this post later, after its continuous usage.
