Recently Lakme launched its first lip-and-cheek color with a weightless mousse texture and long-stay claim. While a few brands in India like The Body Shop and even Lakme itself do have or had lip-and-cheek tints, a proper lip-and-cheek color is something quite new as a product in India. So let us find out how well the dual-functional Lakme 9 to 5 Weightless Matte Mousse Lip and Cheek Color works out...

Lakme has a total of 10 shades in this range which includes atleast one shade from each color family. Every skin-tone can find a suitable color; and that is commendable.
I have picked up 2 shades for now:
Cocoa Soft - a medium-to-dark brown color with brick undertones
Rose Touch - a mauve color with pink/purple undertones

Packaging
An outer rose-gold paper carton which has all the details. The actual lip product comes in a rose-gold tube with a sponge applicator that does its job well. Travel-friendly but definitely not user-friendly - surely Lakme could have had a color-coded sticker somewhere on the tube, if not the whole tube itself.

My Experience
I usually have a gut feeling when I read/hear about a new product which decides whether I am going to get it or not. And that is exactly what made me pick up this new Lakme launch as soon as I could find them. I have tested them for about 11/2 weeks now before writing this review.
Let me start with the packaging. No doubt, great quality, great applicator brush and all that! But the biggest con which I cannot overlook is the lack of color coding. Remember the Lakme Eyeconic Kajal which is so good but has no color indication whatsoever. I have the black, brown, blue and green shades. I use the black one the most, but somehow always get the other colors first and then get the black. It gets very irritating at times!

Coming to the good things, it has a delicious vanilla-butterscotch scent. The applicator brush is teardrop-shaped and picks up enough product in one go. The consistency, true to claim, is that of a mousse/creme and truly feels weightless!
The finish is soft matte - very much similar to the NYX and Miss Claire Soft Matte Lip Creams. There is no glitter, sheen or shimmer atleast in the two shades that I own.
High on pigmentation, it is opaque in one swipe. As a lip color, you can also build/intensify the color by adding layers; it will not look patchy. It glides beautifully. However, as a cheek color, a tiny bit is sufficient; so be careful.
On lips, it takes about 2-5 minutes (depending upon how many layers you have applied) to set into matte. On cheeks, this proves to be a boon because it gives you enough time to blend well. Even otherwise, it blends easily and gives a nice, soft, natural-looking flush of color as a blush.
Once set, it stays on lips for about 5-6 hours with light snacks and drinking. It won't survive heavy meals but will not disappear completely either. Fades evenly and that is very important for me. Touch-up is easy, and so is removal! Does feel dry after a while, but still far better and comfortable than many other matte lipsticks.
Honestly, I haven't used it much as a blush; so cannot comment on staying power on cheeks.
The most beautiful aspect of this product is that (as a lip color) after a few hours, when it starts to feel dry or fade, you can dab a lip balm and rub your lips, and you would get an even application and finish which is great. Of course, it won't be as intense in color but it surely will look appealing, and not patchy.
Exfoliation and prior moisturization is always recommended for any matte product. Also with such lip creams/liquid lipsticks, I have noticed that the natural condition of your lips will decide how the product feels and stays on you. The better the lip condition, the better the experience! A lip-liner would be a good idea to get a nice outline although the applicator brush is good too. The color does not bleed but can stick to dry skin flakes after a while; and hence you must exfoliate and moisturize.

The LOTDs below were also taken in natural light but at different times of the same day.
'Cocoa Soft' is a beautiful brick-brown shade. You can make it darker by adding more layers. The brick undertone gives it a pleasing look. Should suit all skin tones and especially dusky girls. In the below LOTD, I have used it on both lips and cheeks. As a blush, it looks subtle and natural; you will probably not even notice it in the picture!

'Rose Touch' is a mauve color with pink and purple thrown in. Lighter skin tones should be able to carry this color better. If you are dusky like me, you would need an naturally-even skin tone or flawless foundation base to make this work and look gorgeous on you. Otherwise, you may look washed out. When I first tried it without makeup, I didn't like it at all but later with foundation on, I found it looked great!
Also, I observed 'Rose Touch' to be slightly better in finish and formula than 'Cocoa Soft'. Wearing 'Rose Touch' on lips and cheeks in the picture below. Interestingly, I like 'Cocoa Soft' as a lip color and 'Rose Touch' more as a blush!

Pros

- Lack of color-coding - difficult to pick a particular color if you own many, waste of time and energy
- Needs prior exfoliation and moisturization
Overall Impression
All said and done, Lakme 9 to 5 Weightless Matte Mousse Lip and Cheek Color is a wonderful, comfortable matte product to own at an affordable price tag. While the concept of using lipstick as blush is age-old, this ready-to-use dual-functional product becomes handy while travelling or when short of time.
Try atleast one to decide, and get more colors if you like. I recommend it and would surely get more colors if they suit me (inspite of the lack of color coding). I cannot recall how the swatches of 'Burgundy Lush' and 'Blush Velvet' looked on me; so will be rechecking that. Also waiting for a lot more new colors to be added really soon!!!
